Eye of the thin sectionby ~Shirimasen

This is a cross-polarized photomicrograph of a highly altered mineral in a thin section from Bushveld Complex, South Africa. Not sure what it was originally, but it seems to have altered to iron oxides and white micas.

I wonder if this was brought from the Platinum bearing ore body which is mined by PGM and Wesizwe Platinum?

The highly altered nature of the slide is interesting, I have never come across anything quite like this, and I have seen more thin sections that I have had hot dinners!

I wonder if you would have any more information on this... I can see low relief feldspars surrounding it, and the texture looks plutonic, but I've been wrong before!

Thanks for your question! I'll have to ask my adviser more about these thin sections, since they're not my area of study. I just went through her collection looking for something beautiful to share. I'll see if I can get back to you on your questions in the near future. :]
